Between the 1940s and the 1970s many families came to the UK from across the world and particularly from South Asia after Partition, and from the Caribbean islands as part of the Windrush generation.
The women who migrated embarked on a long journey, leaving their homes and often family behind. They have rich experiences and interesting stories to tell – yet in the past their voices have often remained unheard.
In this new series of films produced by STAMP, we discover a number of trail-blazing women who came to Britain and settled in Coventry. We hear of the journey to the Midlands, their initial impressions of a changing city, and their experiences, trials and triumphs as they reflect on the past decades.
From work to weather, food to faith, the women paint a vivid picture of a new experience. The films will contribute to a bigger portrait of the rich diversity of the city of Coventry in a fascinating and very human story.
